February 11 was going well until the last hour of the day. That’s because moments before the ICC deadline, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named their final squad for the Champions Trophy 2025. Sadly, Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t in it. Other major updates were the selection of Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy along with the non-selection of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Most of the other news was that the Indian Premier League (IPL) was dominated. With jersey updates for Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sanju Samson undergoing a finger jersey, a change in Gujarat Titans (GT) ownership, and a Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captaincy update. Lastly, we saw three of the four semifinalists of the Ranji Trophy getting confirmed.
Jasprit Bumrah out of Champions Trophy
The India cricket team fans’ worst fear has come true. Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy. The pacer who had sustained a lower back injury in early January hasn’t recovered in time. The BCCI has replaced him with Harshit Rana. The other major change is that Jaiswal has been replaced with Varun Chakaravarthy. Jaiswal has been added to the non-travelling reserves list along with Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube.
Sanju Samson undergoes finger surgery
Sanju Samson, who had injured his right hand earlier in the month, has undergone right index finger surgery. The wicketkeeper batter was struck by Jofra Archer and didn’t come to keep the wickets, with Dhruv Jurel doing the duties for him at the Wankhede Stadium. The IPL 2025 season will start on March 21. Will he recover in time? Will Samson miss RR’s tournament opener?
Rahane or Venkatesh Iyer, who’ll be KKR’s new captain
Is the cat out of the bag? Has Ajinkya Rahane confirmed that Venkatesh Iyer will be KKR’s captain for the IPL 2025 season? Addressing the media in Kolkata after Mumbai’s quarterfinal clash against Haryana, Rahane revealed that KKR management hasn’t had a chat regarding a potential leadership role. Since Rahane and Venkatesh are the two main candidates for captaincy, one can assume that Venkatesh Iyer will be Shreyas Iyer’s replacement.

Change in Gujarat Titans ownership before IPL 2025
CVC Capital Partners have decided to sell their majority share in the Gujarat Titans. Having bought the franchise for Rs 5625 crore in 2021, CVC wants to sell a 67% stake to the Torrent Group. This would mean that CVC won’t have a major say in decision-making going forward. The ownership change is expected to be completed before the IPL 2025 season.
3 out of 4 Ranji Trophy semifinal teams set
Three of the four Ranji Trophy quarterfinals ended on Day 4. All the three teams that won, did so convincingly. Mumbai beat Haryana by 152 runs, Vidarbha earned a victory over Tamil Nadu by 198 runs and Gujarat defeated Saurashtra by an innings and 198 runs. The Kerala vs Jammu and Kashmir match is still underway and could go either way.
Ed Sheeran unveils RR’s training jersey
Famous English singer Ed Sheeran has unveiled RR’s training jersey for the IPL 2025. Currently on a musical tour in India, Sheeran, along with Riyan Parag and Tushar Deshpande, revealed the new training kit for the Royals. The singer donned the jersey himself in a video released by the franchise and was heard saying that RR is his “team for life now.”
