KKR has already endured a poor start to IPL 2025, where they lost to RCB in their opening encounter, and now it seems, the Eden Gardens pitch curator has turned down skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s request, to make it a spinning-wicket. Sujan Mukherjee, the in-charge of the pitch in Kolkata, spoke to RevSportz and made it clear, that the nature of wicket won’t be changed.
Ajinkya Rahane Asks for Spin-Friendly Pitch
“As long as I’m here, Eden Gardens pitch will not change,” said Mukherjee. “As per the IPL rules and regulations, franchises have no say over the pitch. Ever since I have taken charge, the pitches here have been like this. It was like this in the past. Things haven’t changed now, and it will not be altered in the future.”
After a thumping by RCB on the first day of the tournament, Rahane had said, “We would love to see the pitch helping the spin bowlers but again, this wicket was under covers for the last one-and-a-half days.” But despite the presence of quality spinners like Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine in the ranks, both of them couldn’t exploit the conditions much.
Eden Gardens Curator Turns Down Request
On the other hand, the curator added, that the Eden Gardens pitch has a lot to offer to the spinners, but it is up to the bowlers to extract something from the wicket. “Their (RCB) spinners took four wickets between them,” argued Mukherjee. “What did the KKR spinners do? Krunal Pandya got three wickets. Suyash Sharma turned the ball to castle Andre Russell.”
Meanwhile, KKR play their next match vs Rajathan Royals in Guwahati on Wednesday. Just like KKR, even RR had suffered a huge loss against SRH in Hyderabad.
