Have you ever seen a first-class match getting over at 2:30 AM, you must not, but it’s a reality now. The final of the President Trophy Grade 1 tournament in Pakistan is taking place at a different time than usual to accommodate players during Ramadan, a period when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. The final, featuring the State Bank of Pakistan against Pakistan Television, began on March 4 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The stadium was initially set to host a Champions Trophy match with Bangladesh, but weather conditions intervened, so the match didn’t happen.
First Class match under the lights
In a unique move, the match is being played under floodlights with the first ball bowled at 7:30 pm PKT (8 pm IST). This scheduling adjustment allows players the opportunity to break their fast during Iftar. The match sessions are structured as follows: the first session lasts until 9:30 pm PKT, followed by a brief tea break. Then, the second session runs until 11:50 pm PKT, with a dinner break preceding the final session, which concludes at 2:30 am.
The use of pink ball in the match
The match will continue until Saturday, March 8, and marks a historic moment in Pakistan’s first-class cricket as it uses a pink ball under floodlights. This adaptation respects the Ramadan traditions where Muslims partake in Suhoor (a meal before dawn) and Iftar (meal to break the fast at sunset) while engaging more deeply in prayer, Quran recitation, and acts of charity.
