Indian chess sensation D Gukesh is having the time of his life. After working hard through competitions, he finally made headlines by becoming the youngest-ever Chess Champion after defeating Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren. The 18-year-old prodigy arrived in India just two days ago, where he was warmly welcomed with great excitement and celebrations. Also, he got a grand welcome at the Chennai Airport.
Shouting ‘I Am the World Champion’
A video of him is going viral recently, actually, before returning home, Gukesh took some well-deserved time for adventure. He visited Skypark Sentosa, an adventure-themed park in Singapore, and tried his hand at bungee jumping. In a viral reel shared by Chessbase India, Gukesh can be seen gearing up for his first-ever bungee jump. When asked how he felt, he humorously responded, “Scared.”
As Gukesh was released from the 200-foot-high platform, he shouted, “I am the World Champion.” The moment quickly went viral, showcasing the young champion’s joy and excitement.
Historic achievement for Gukesh
D Gukesh is only the second-ever Indian to win the World Chess Championship title, after the legendary Viswanathan Anand. This year has been extraordinary for Gukesh. He first won the FIDE Candidates in March, securing his place in the World Chess Championship. Later, in September, he led the Indian men’s team to a historic Chess Olympiad victory. Gukesh capped off a memorable year by defeating Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in a thrilling World Championship battle.

Gukesh’s victory has admiration and inspired a wave of enthusiasm in the Indian chess community. Messages of congratulations is flowed in from all corners, including cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who acknowledged Gukesh’s vast potential and described his win as opening up “a world of endless possibilities.” Along with him, a lot of celebs and cricketers have congratulated the young boy from Chennai.
