Former India off-spinner R Ashwin has voiced his disappointment over England’s performance in the recent IND vs ENG series, where they lost both the T20 series 1-4 and the ODI series 0-3. Ashwin commented on his Hindi YouTube channel, “Ash Ki Baat,” saying, “To see such a talented England side perform in such a way was disappointing and sad.” Despite the poor showing, Ashwin believes England has the ability to bounce back in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. He thinks, “It is not that they don’t have the ability. I am sticking my neck out and will say again that this is a top-class England side, but they have taken this ODI series against India very lightly.”
After losing the second ODI, England opener Ben Duckett claimed he wasn’t too concerned about the series loss if England could beat India in the Champions Trophy final. He said, “If we lose 3-0 to India, I don’t care as long as we beat them in the final in the Champions Trophy.” Ashwin criticised Duckett for humourally masking England’s poor performance. Ashwin recalled Duckett’s comments on Yashasvi Jaiswal during the 2024 Test series, where Duckett had suggested Jaiswal learned his aggressive style from England. Ashwin remarked, “No matter what Ben Duckett says, but this series loss will create a big dent in their confidence.”
Ashwin also addressed comments made by England Test captain Ben Stokes regarding the World Test Championship (WTC) points system. Ashwin said, “Even in Test cricket, I read somewhere that Ben Stokes said that he doesn’t understand the points system of the WTC.” Ashwin advised Stokes to understand the system instead of using it as an excuse. He added, “This is not a joke. Every time you lose, you bring up such lame excuses.”

Ashwin’s critique extended beyond individual comments, highlighting broader issues with England’s recent cricketing strategy. He pointed out, “Your 2023 ODI WC was pretty bad as well… Despite having such a talented group, they are not able to justify their potential.” With the Champions Trophy ahead, England will need to reevaluate their strategies and focus on their potential to return as a strong contender.
