Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has backed Varun Chakravarthy to shine in ICC Champions Trophy. The Tamil Nadu spinner was added to India’s squad in the last-minute as he replaced Yashasvi Jaiswal. Ahead of the marquee tournament, Ponting said that Varun could potentially create a big impact in CT 2025.

Speaking on ICC Review, Ponting said that Varun could rattle the opposition is Champions Trophy with his variation and skill. He backed the spinner to shine on the big stage, adding that Chakravarthy had been dubbed as a T20 bowler for most of his life. With Varun’s addition, India cricket team boasts of a strong spin unit comprising of Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.
“I think (Varun) Chakravarthy can have a huge impact on the tournament as well for India He’s probably pretty much through his career been pigeonholed as a T20 bowler only, but he’s just with what he can do and his variations and his skill, I think he can have a huge impact on the Champions Trophy,” Ponting said.

After impressing in the T20I series, Varun was fast-tracked to ODIs as well. He then made a last-minute entry into India’s Champions Trophy squad, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal. The mystery spinner already has the experience of playing in UAE, having featured in the T20 World Cup in 2022. The Tamil Nadu spinner will only bolster India’s spin unit, with the team relying on the spinner to take the opposition by surprise.
