Recently, in the pre-season press conference on Monday, head coach Ricky Ponting pointed out one thing, which is keeping the Punjab Kings (PBKS) back. The team finished 9th in the points table last year, losing 9 matches out of 14 matches. It seems like Punjab has underperformed on the home grounds, which eventually cost them an awful finish in the 2024 season.

Speaking to the media, Ricky Ponting pointed out that the team had problems at home. “We have lost matches at home last year, team aims to understand their home conditions better with training camps and practice games, focusing on creating new memories and winning games at home.” he said.
On choosing the right playing XI, he said, “Choosing the playing eleven won’t be easy with our talented players. We have two practice games to help decide. We want competition for spots, ensuring everyone works hard.”
Punjab Kings at home in IPL 2024
Punjab Kings have two home grounds currently; one is Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, Chandigarh. And one is HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala. Kings played 14 matches total, winning 1 out of 7 home games in Chandigarh and Dharamsala while losing 6, and winning 4 out of 7 away matches with 3 losses.

Ponting’s confidence in players
On the new team’s plans under the new captain and coach, it’s a process handled primarily by the head coach. “I wanted a big change when I was appointed head coach. Our auction strategy focused on bringing key players like Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep, and Yuzi Chahal to rebuild the team from the bottom up,” he said. He emphasised the importance of having high-quality Indian players and a mix of youth and experience, expressing satisfaction with the squad’s preparation.
